How do I find my head size?
Take a tape measure and measure around your head, just above your ears, in either inches or centimetres. We can convert the measurement in inches to a hat size e.g. 24 inches equals 7 ½ and the measurement in centimetres equates exactly to that hat size e.g. 61 centimetres equals a hat size of 61cms.
What should I do when my hat or cap gets wet?
Our felt hats protect you from the elements because they contain natural oils. When you get home from being out in a downpour you should allow your hat to dry naturally rather than force dry them.
My hat or cap appears to have become smaller
Our hats and caps are made from natural fibres and when they become wet and are not dried properly they may contract and reduce the hat size very slightly. We always advise customers to allow for a little shrinkage, especially if they are buying tweed products. Should you encounter this problem we sell a product called ''The Hat Jack'' which is shown on the Trilby page of our web site. This device will enable you to stretch any hat or cap back to its original size. Alternatively, you can play some steam from a kettle on your hat or cap and give it a gentle tug over your knee!
I have inherited a silk top hat but it is too small - can you make it bigger?
Sadly the answer to this question is no. However we can redistribute the shape and so if there is a gap on the sides of the head we could take a head shape and reconform the hat to that shape. We get asked this question on a regular basis because when these hats were made men were generally of a smaller stature and had smaller head sizes. At the present time we buy in second hand silk top hats but they have to be at least a size 7 ¼ for us to be interested and in excellent condition. Perhaps you should start looking in the attic!
